Award-winning Arizona journalist Terry Greene Sterling, author of theonly nonfiction

book that profiles unauthorized immigrants living in Phoenix, willgive her first Tucson

reading and book signing atAntigone Books in Tucson, on May 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Sterling is a three-time winner of Arizona's highest journalism award and a former staff writer at Phoenix New Times. She has been honored with multiple national and regional journalism awards. Today, she'scontributor for The Daily Beast, the only national publication that had a writer (Sterling ) cover day-to-day proceedings of the borderlands murder trial of Shawna Forde- theMinutewoman sentenced to death for themurders of Brisenia Flores and her father Raul in a botched home invasion.

Sterling's 2010 investigative package for Phoenix New Times, about the influence of nativist groups in the immigration debate, was among several Village Voice Media stories that won the Aranson Award for social justice reporting.

Sterling is also Writer-in-Residence at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where shecoachesstudents and teachesMagazine Writing.

Hamilton High School, located in the East Valley of the Phoenix metroarea, will

host FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)

Arizona Regional Competition gathering High School teams from Arizona and

other neighboring statesand their robotic creations in a challenge of applied

science and technology.

The Regional will take placeMarch 18-19, 2011.Hamilton High School is located at3700 S.

Arizona Avenue,Chandler, AZ 85248.

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an event that teams professionals and young

people to solve engineering design problems in an intense and competitive way. The

program is a life changing, career-molding experience in a fun and positiveenviroment

framed by "gracious professionalism".

The organizing sponsor for the competition in Arizona is Microchip Technology,

Inc. with thesupport of Science Foundation Arizona, Avnet,

Craig and Barbara Barrett Foundation, Steve and Maria Sanghi,

Wells Fargo Bank, On Semiconductors,USAirways, Critical Mass

Communications, among others.

This year the game for the competition is calledLOGO MOTION ^.In the game, two

alliances of three teams will compete on a 27-by-54-foot field with poles,

attemptingto earn points by hanging as many triangle, circle and square logo

pieces as possible. Bonus points will be earned for each robot that can hang

and assemble logo pieces to form theFIRSTlogo.

Robots can also deploy Mini-Bots to climb vertical poles for a chance to earn additional points.

FIRST Robotic Competition (FRC)Arizona Regionalunites 45 teams from

High School and their mentors to construct a functional robot in six weeks

that can perform certain tasks pre-established by the game .Students

participate on the design, construction, testing, operation etc., of the project

and on other activities like promotion and fundraising.

The completion provides the students a hands on experience in the fieldof

science and technology applied to robots.

This competitionaims to motivate students to pursue careers in STEM (Science

Technology Engineering and Math) currently in great demand in our communities

and necessary to maintain the competitiveness of the USA.

Carl Hayden High School Starts 2011 Robotics Season

with New Engineering Challenge.

Falcons Participate on FIRST Robotics' Arizona Regional

What: FIRST Robotics Kick Off

When: Saturday January the 8th, 2011.

The internationally known and awarded Carl Hayden High

School Robotics team, Falcon robotics, will start the year

2011 participating on the FIRST Challenge kick off.

The event is scheduled to take place January the 8^th, 2011

at 8:30 am with the unveiling of the new game.

FIRST stands For Inspiration and Recognition of Science

and Technology.

The Arizona Regional kick off will take place at Brophy

College preparatory, where the new game and robot

specifications will be presented and the Falcons will start

brainstorming to design a robot that can accomplish the

task established by the new game. 45 Teams enrolled for

the challenge will pick up a robot kit that has the basic

elements from which they can start their design and add

to it or modify.

Brophy College Preparatory is located at 4701 North

Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012. The new challenge is

being broadcast simultaneously to all FIRST teams in all

Regional locations in the USA and the world via NASA

webcast.

FIRST hosts international competitions where teams of

professionals and young students solve engineering and

design problems, creating a functional robot in a

competitive environment framed into the concept of

gracious professionalism. FIRST aims to motivate students

to pursue careers on STEM (Science Technology

Engineering and Math) that are currently in great demand

in our communities and are necessary to maintain the

competitiveness of the USA.

The Carl Hayden Falcon Robotics will have 6 weeks to

design, built and test the robot then ship it to the

Regional competition that will take place in Hamilton High

School located in Chandler, AZ on March 18^th to 19^th 2011.

On 2008 the Falcons achieve the top award for High

School Robotics competitions in the world, the FIRST

Chairman's Award, that is given annually to the team that

not only had created good robotics projects but that

consistently helps change the culture of their community

to one more that shares their passion for Science and

Technology.
